Local Medway band, The Spaces, got back in touch with me after creating their single artwork for their song ‘Ecstasy’ in November 2022. This time they were after an EP cover for their 2023 release called ‘Closed Curtains’. They had sent me an initial sketch for an idea that they had, along with images of other work I have created as reference for the direction of the artwork for this new EP. Not only will the work be on Spotify and CDs, but also future band merchandise such as hoodies and t-shirts. I wanted to take inspiration from ‘Ecstasy’ by sticking to a similar colour palette and help further their brand identity. The theme of the EP, although quite dark, is tasteful in its nature and I felt the artwork needed to be reflective of that. ‘Closed Curtains’ in reference to the end of a show, or as the album artwork suggests, a life. As the skeleton takes aim, a rich array of red and pink botanicals explode from the back of its skull, highlighting the beauty that lies within no matter what direction life takes us. The background is made up of scanned in paper texture, with the same texture in a different colour wrapped around the skeletons head - perhaps the note left behind. The artwork has been composed in the same way I would a fabric. Individual illustrations. Each flower its own artwork that has been scanned in and digitally manipulated to create the desired effect.
